Jocelyn felt herself doze off again.

Mrs. Marlee explained Doc Halliday’s instructions for keeping the first two weeks schedule light. Only the mornings would be booked. That way, Jocelyn could get her bearings straight and get her routine down.

That left afternoons for surgeries and to catch up if any emergencies arose in the mornings.

With Fletch bathed, patched up, medicated, and tucked away for an afternoon nap in the corner of the room, Jocelyn sat in her Uncle’s office and tried to complete the morning charting. Problem was, the constant teasing by the office manager had her frustrated.

Marlee Perkins could be an ally or an adversary and Jocelyn hadn’t decided which side of the fence the woman fell on yet. Although she’d been a loyal employee of her uncle’s for the past thirty years, she was also Tish Martin’s aunt. Her finding Caleb here this morning set a much different mood to the place and Jocelyn on edge.

It didn’t matter that Caleb as well as Ethan and Harrison tried to explain to the office manager the gravity of the situation, Marlee kept that twinkle in her eyes every time she looked at Jocelyn and Caleb before he left to pick up his kids from school.

That, added to her father’s visit, basically no sleep last night, and now knowing about Caine Montgomery, had her almost ready to run, screaming for the hills.

She’d dozed off a few times during her morning appointments and had to ask people to repeat their animal’s symptoms.

By lunch, Jocelyn felt cross-eyed and exhausted.

“Jet-lag get you, Sweetheart?” Mrs. Marlee handed Jocelyn a mug of coffee.

The aroma of fresh coffee perked her up. “Something like that. Do you know a good carpenter? I need my back door fixed.”

Marlee raised an eyebrow. “I might. What’s wrong with it?”

“It won’t close.” The bitter taste of the coffee made Jocelyn grimace slightly, but being under Mrs. Marlee’s watchful eye, Jocelyn smiled sweetly. “Thank you. It’s perfect.”

“Yes, I know someone. Do you need it today?”

“Today would be really helpful.”

“I’ll see what I can do. You’re done with your scheduled patients.” She pointed to the stack of charts in the corner before pivoting on her heels and leaving. “Doc said you should go through those because those are the regulars, especially my sister-in-law’s Peek-a-Poo.”

The mention of Tish’s mom tasted more bitter than the coffee. “Deloris Martin’s? What’s wrong with it?”

“Usually nothing, but because of the Alzheimer’s, she can’t remember much about the dog. She sends Tish in her about once a week to get him checked out anyway. She’s already set up an appointment for Friday.”

When it rains, it pours. “Thank you.”

After looking through three charts, her eyelids were so heavy, she couldn’t fight it anymore. She rested her head on the desk and closed her eyes.

Trust me. Caleb’s words whispered to her as she drifted into a light sleep.

If she could only explain how hard that request would be for her. She trusted a great many things, but people were usually a different story. Too many times she’d been let down by the men in her life.
